On April 26, 2008 we featured our first “Discoveries with Schel” wine tasting. These wine tastings are about taking a journey in wine and discovering hidden gems. We featured 3 wines that are not part of our current inventory. They were Waterbrook Melange Blanc (Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Viognier, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris & Sauvignon Blanc) from Washington, Tusk N Red (Syrah, Carignan, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah & Sangiovese) from Mendicino, California, and St Francis Winery Red (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Zinfandel) from Sonoma, California.
What we don’t advertise is food. Schel, being a retired Chef, prepares all the snacks for our tastings. He usually takes care of plating and serving the items as well. This time was different, I was the Chef. On the menu was grilled summer vegetables, such as Zuccini, Squash, Red, Yellow and Orange Peppers, Eggplant, Roasted Tomato, and Asparagus. Sliced bread with a Sauteed Spinach & Roasted Garlic topping, Beef Sausage & 2 year Cheddar Cheese. YUM!
Each wine was delicious, but all had their differences. The Waterbrook Melange Blanc was pleasant on the palate, the blend of all those grapes left a fruity sensation. This wine was very versatile with the food because of its multitude of flavors, such apples, stone fruit, honey, spices & ginger. The Tusk N Red has an Italian twist, from California with bright fruit flavors & spice. We thought the Roasted Tomatoes were an excellent match, as well as the meat & cheese. The St Francis Winery has a new wine called ”Red”. It is a full-flavored and full-bodied wine with a red fruit character and spices. We thought It matched really well with the Grilled Vegetables, bringing out its toasty flavor, the Roasted Tomato brought out its fruity character, meat & cheese were a great match as well.
Unfortunately there is always an end to a wonderful experience. Once all the wine & food is gone and it is time to go home, remeber to take a couple bottles of that favorite wine home to make more discoveries with your own food choices. All 3 wines are available to order, at a minimum of 3 bottles, they retail for $15.00 each. If you’ve had a chance to taste these specific wines, we’d appreciate any questions or comments about them. “Let your palate be the guide”
